Star Wars Celebration is in town and Hasbro has taken the opportunity to display some new figures for us all – along with something that this particular fly-boy has been waiting on for a long time…

Luke Skywalker Three-Pack: Jedi Destiny (The Vintage Collection)

Vintage Collection Luke Skywalker - Jedi Destiny | Green Card Back

There wasn’t a great deal of 3.75″ on display at Celebration but this new pack still earned the limelight. Featuring super-articulated versions of Luke Skywalker in Stormtrooper disguise, X-Wing pilot uniform and as a Jedi Knight from his arrival at Jabba’s Palace, this is the ultimate new-collector friendly Luke Skywalker starter set.

Even if you already have serviceable versions of the character in these outfits, the photo-real face printing makes an enormous difference to the likeness. And let’s be honest: getting a Jedi Knight Luke with an accurate cloak is the ultimate sweetener.

Galaxy’s Edge Exclusive Black Series Sets

Let’s move on to the 6″ scale, where Hasbro officially launched a raft of exclusive Black Series figures for the upcoming Galaxy’s Edge theme park…

Smuggler's Run - Star Wars Black Series Galaxy's Edge Exclusive | Green Card Back

The first set, Smuggler’s Run, features a new version of Rey from The Last Jedi, featuring a photo real likeness, along with Chewbacca (the 2015 The Force Awakens version) and a brand new release in Hondo Ohnaka, stalwart of Clone Wars and Rebels. The set is rounded out with two Porgs.

First Order - Star Wars Black Series Galaxy's Edge Exclusive | Green Card Back

The First Order pack features a kitbashed Kylo Ren, Commander Pyre (a gold Stormtrooper from Resistance) and a Mountain Trooper, a new soldier that looks like a cross between the Hovertank Driver and Range Trooper. Much like the Porgs in Smuggler’s Run, the First Order set also includes an MSE droid with rolling wheels.

Droid Depot - Star Wars Black Series Galaxy's Edge Exclusive | Green Card Back

The final set, Droid Depot, brings us updated versions of C-3PO and BB-8, a repack of R2-D2 and a new droid in DJ R3X, which looks like exactly how you might imagine a crassly commercialised version of a Star Wars droid to look.

In a neat touch the packaging was designed to look like something that you could buy in the Star Wars universe. YMMV on how successful that is, but it definitely makes the exclusives that much more worthwhile.

Black Series Emperor Palpatine with Throne

Black Series Emperor Palpatine with Throne | Green Card Back

It’s been a big week for ol’ Sheev Palpatine, and now the ultimate evil in the universe finally has the ultimate toy.

Collectors have been asking about this for a while, and Hasbro is now delivering with the Deluxe Black Series Emperor Palpatine. Based on his appearance in Return of the Jedi, the Emperor comes packed with his distinctive throne from the second Death Star, three different heads and Force lightning effects.

Taste the Rainbow: SDCC Exclusives

The Retro Collection is already not for me – re-releases of iconic toys that have been supplanted in quality for over 20 years already. But for some these things are bound to scratch an itch.

The Retro Collection SDCC exclusive Darth Vader is something I can easily see fitting into place in design studios across the land. It’s a Star Wars toy for people who don’t collect Star Wars toys, in much the same way that The Last Jedi was a Star Wars film for people who don’t like Star Wars films.

SDCC Exclusive Black Series Boba Fett | Green Card Back

The SDCC exclusive Boba Fett is a re-release of the 6″ figure but in vintage action figure colours – equally rainbow, but with a little more precedent.

As someone on Rebelscum posted, “these are the best kinds of exclusives – ones I don’t want”. Can’t say fairer than that.

This is Red 5 Standing By

Now on to the best reveal of Star Wars Celebration Chicago – something that I do want very much: the Black Series Luke Skywalker X-Wing Helmet.

There are only a select few buckets that I would ever want to own (the OT Scout Trooper and TIE Fighter Pilot being the remaining exceptions), but Luke’s X-Wing pilot helmet is front and centre of that list.

That’s why I’m so happy to see this Black Series version ready for market; and it looks like Hasbro has delivered. Features include:

  • Highly-detailed movie-inspired deco with interior padding
  • Synchronized LED lights inside the visor
  • Three internal speakers create a surround sound experience and simulate the blasts of enemy vehicles
  • Flip switch to choose between a simulation of piloting an X-Wing at the Battle of Yavin or a Snowspeeder at the Battle of Hoth

The Black Series Luke Skywalker X-Wing Helmet is hitting retail in October at an RRP of $99.00. X-Wing vs TIE Fighter LAN sessions are now set to get that much more intense…

That’s it for the newsworthy Hasbro reveals. It’s a mixed bag but there’s something in there for everyone, which is exactly how Star Wars should be.

**

On a related note, Lucasfilm have also revealed the branding look for The Rise of Skywalker merchandise.

Rise of Skywalker packaging design from Lucasfilm | Green Card Back

It’s Kylo Ren focused, which makes sense given that this is Disney’s last big opportunity to push Ren as the in-house replacement for Darth Vader. However it does then have the unfortunate side effect of looking remarkably similar to the packaging for The Force Awakens

Ah well. It’s OK, I guess, but it’s still just a box. It all goes in the recycling anyway because these things were made to be played with.
